Are you indulging in enough self-care? and if you do, do you feel guilty? This is something I want to touch on in today’s post.
I’ve not had the best week, I know it’s only Wednesday… but if there was a week I needed to step up my self-care this is it! I’m feeling pretty low after losing my beloved pet lizard of 10 years. If you’ve ever had a pet you will sympathise no matter what animal it is its departure leaves much sadness in your heart. This week I need to be a little kinder to myself, so indulging in enough self-care is at the forefront of my mind.
Recognise when to take time for you
We are all majorly busy these days but you can usually tell when you are heading for burn out. Your tired, you’re impatient, you’re snappy, you could burst into tears at any minute… sound familiar? you definitely need to do YOU! Or maybe like myself you have suffered something recently that has brought you great sadness. It’s time to listen to your emotions, your body and take that time out.
What is self-care?
Great question… difficult to answer in my opinion. Selfcare is such a buzz word these days, so it can be a bit overwhelming. My definition of self-care is quite simply… taking time out for yourself. What you do with that time is your choice… What do you need to do to feel rested, rejuvenated and regain mental clarity? Whatever that is, do that!
But I feel so guilty…
STOP! You have heard it a million times but self-care is not selfish. You know what is selfish? not being the best version of yourself for those around you because you didn’t take much needed time out.
How often should you indulge in self-care?
Every god damn week! haha! You know, I would consider aspects of my morning routine self-care and several of my healthy habits. But the issue is with these when you do them religiously you kinda forget they are! Yes, you are looking after yourself but they fail to make you feel like you’ve had that extra time out when you do them every day. So how do we fix this?
Take extra time outside of daily routines for self-care!
Ohhh but when I will I have time? You have to make time!
Examples of 10 minute self-care
Here’s a list of things I like to do when I feel I need that extra self-care. Why not think about things you like doing that can be done in only 10 minutes and make your own list? I swear that little 10 minutes of ‘me’ time helps to keep me sane.
- Have a bubble bath
- Read some of your book
- Listen to part of a podcast
- Treat yourself to a magazine
- Catch up with a friend on the phone
- Dance to your favourite song
- Do a facemask
- Paint your nails
- Do some magic painting
- Declutter a space you’ve been meaning to!
Also…. Do nothing! I totally struggle with this one and it is where my guilt sets in but doing is just magical if you can silence your mind… remember just focus on your breath… you don’t have to shut your eyes either!
Have you ever tried digital detox? I did last year and I had to say it was truly wonderful. We are all so uber-connected these days screen take over our lives. If you have not done one then you should definitely give that a whirl!
The ultimate form of self-care for me would be a spa day for sure. The other year I went to Ragdale Hall and I swear I have never come back from anywhere as a rejuvenated as this. Even a two week holiday! Sadly I didn’t have my blog then but when I eventually return I will be sure to share it with you guys. If you want to check it out you can do that here.
Check in with yourself…
So do you think you are indulging in enough self-care? or are you your last priority? I hope this post has helped you to realise how important it is and inspired you to take some extra time for yourself. Tonight I will be having a bit of a pamper session which will include several of the things I mention and you know what I won’t feel guilty one bit!
I would love to hear any self-care tips you have for me too so pop them in the comments!
Enjoy the rest of your week!
