These winter skincare tips are bound to help you maintain a glowing complexion throughout the colder months. Winter here in the UK is well and truly setting in now in the month of November. Early dark nights, cold mornings and… dry skin! I can notice a distinct change in my skin at this time of year but I have discovered how to keep glowing ready for the party season. Some of these winter skincare tips you have probably heard before but maybe not all of them!

Hydrate

Let’s kick off with the most basic skincare tip of all… HYDRATE! This applies all year round but in winter we can forget to do so as much as were are not hot. I’m not talking teas and coffees… water is your friend. I can actually tell by just looking at my face when I am dehydrated. My eyes look more hollow and my fine lines are more visible. Go neck that pint of water now, GO!

Turn Down the Heating!

For goodness sake turn down the heating in your car and home. Nothing is more drying for your skin than this! We try to have ours on sparingly… I personally think this is actually the biggest culprit for wreaking havoc on your skin in winter. But there is another solution…

Buy a Humidifier

This is a winter skincare tip I only came across this year but a humidifier is something I wish I had invested in a long time ago. Your bedroom is probably retaining heat from the blast of heating you put on when you got home and let me guess… you set it to come back on in the morning? The air in your home is dry, but especially in the bedroom. Don’t believe me? are you reaching for a drink in the middle of the night? suddenly got a cough? there you go! A humidifier will put some moisture back in the air which will also really help your skin.

Eat a Diet Rich in Antioxidants

Keep your skin healthy from the inside out. Vitamins A, C and E are essential for good skin. Try adding spinach to your smoothie, a handful of blueberries and pomegranate seeds to your warm winter porridge and when you want to reach for that snack a handful of nuts is the way to go!

Change Your Moisturiser

The moisturiser you have been using may not cut it in the winter months so don’t be afraid to switch it up and try something more hydrating, your skin will thank you for it.

Invest in an Overnight Treatment Mask

There are many treatments available that you leave on your skin overnight. I love sleeping in an intensely nourishing mask like Clarins SOS comfort nourishing balm mask and waking up with plump, hydrated skin.

Exfoliate

Exfoliating is just as important in winter as summer… buff away those dead skin cells and reveal a glowing you! exfoliating will improve the effectiveness of your moisturiser. I like to exfoliate 2-3 times a week and after one of those apply my overnight treatment mask.

Carry a Hydrating Mist in Your Handbag

Hydrating mists are a godsend when your skin is extra dry… why? because they can be applied over your make up. But I should add here if you’re using the right moisturiser essentially you shouldn’t need one. I love to use them when travelling but it is something I have in my bag in winter too for a little skin pick me up!

Treat Yourself to a Facial

Your skin cell growth takes 3-4 weeks to run through a cycle. So why not treat yourself to a facial once a month to give your skin that extra boost? Regular facials help keep your skin clear and hydrated. I am a huge fan! I have one scheduled in every three weeks. I also tried a vampire facial once too, you can read about that here.

Don’t Forget… it’s Not Just Your Face!

Skin is the biggest organ and whilst we always concentrate on the face we mustn’t neglect the rest of it. We all worry about our faces and ageing etc but what about our hands? they are always on show and one of the first parts of our body to show ageing. Keep them well moisturised in the winter months with a hand cream by your sink (use after you have washed up!) and in your bag. Aside from this to give your body an extra moisture boost consider adding bath oil to your tub. Alternatively, you can keep it simple by using half a cup of honey – did you know its a natural moisturiser!
